HIGHLIGHTS
County Medical Examiner Releases Mid-Year and Annual Reports, November 2020
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office released both mid-year statistics comparing the first six months of 2020 to 2019 and its 2019 annual report. In addition, the Medical Examiner has added case records through Jun. 30, 2020, to the County's open data portal, bringing the total records available to over 65,000.
“By releasing this level of data, we hope people can study risk factors and identify common issues and trends that could perhaps lead to discoveries and improvements in health that ultimately can save lives,” said Interim Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Steven Campman.

Crime Rate
Crime rates (the number of crimes per 1,000 residents) in the San Diego region are among the lowest in the United States. The region’s calendar year 2019 crime outcomes showed the following:
  • 2019 Violent Crime Rate = 3.40 per 1,000 residents
  • 2019 Property Crime Rate = 16.48 per 1,000 residents
These figures stand lower than comparable national rates of 3.67 violent crimes per 1,000 residents and 21.10 property crimes per 1,000 residents.

Office of Emergency Services
The Office of Emergency Services (OES) coordinates the overall county response to disasters. OES is responsible for alerting and notifying appropriate agencies when disaster strikes; coordinating all agencies that respond; ensuring resources are available and mobilized in times of disaster; developing plans and procedures for response to and recovery from disasters; and developing and providing preparedness materials for the public, including information on completing a Personal Disaster Plan. Go to ReadySanDiego for more information on disaster planning and preparation.

Medical Examiner Cases
In March 2019, officials with the San Diego County Department of the Medical Examiner released 22 years worth of data, from 1997 to 2018, making an initial set of over 59,000 records available on the County's open data portal. Read more...

This regularly updated dataset includes all San Diego County accidental deaths, homicides, suicides, in-custody deaths, and a very small percentage of sudden or unexpected natural deaths in which the decedent had not seen a health care provider in the last 20 days of life.

County of San Diego Preparedness Study (2017)
The 2017 San Diego County Preparedness Survey, commissioned by the County of San Diego Office of Emergency Services and developed and conducted by Integrated Solutions Consulting, surveyed a random sample of 60,000 San Diego County residents over the age of 18. 1,075 residents completed the survey.
