Free Blood Pressure Screening Event Helps Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke
Love Your Heart is an annual event in which organizations from across the U.S. and Mexico join together to provide FREE blood pressure screenings to the public on Valentine's Day, February 14th. Love Your Heart began in 2012 with a simple mission – help prevent heart disease and stroke to reduce the percentage of deaths in San Diego County due to chronic disease. Over the last nine years of Love Your Heart more people have joined the heart health movement and are now aware of how important it is to know their numbers to monitor their health.
How are we doing?
Heart disease (including coronary heart disease, hypertension and stroke) remains a leading cause of death both locally and nationally. In San Diego County, data show an increase in deaths due to overall hypertensive disease from 2011 to 2017.
The first component of the Live Well San Diego vision, Building Better Health, aims to improve the health of all residents and support healthy choices through access to quality care, physical activity, healthy eating, and preventing tobacco and other drug use. The County of San Diego and its partners collaborate regularly, each contributing in unique ways to advance the shared vision and make a greater impact on the health of the 3.3 million residents living in the region. Love Your Heart is one example of that collaboration.
Why is measuring blood pressure important?
High blood pressure greatly increases the risk of heart disease and stroke, but it often has no symptoms. That’s why blood pressure screenings are so important. The best way to know if a person’s blood pressure is in a healthy or unhealthy range is to get it checked regularly. Understanding your results is key to controlling high blood pressure.
What to do when high blood pressure is identified?
When high blood pressure is identified, it can be managed through lifestyle changes and/or medication long before it escalates to an emergency situation. Events like Love Your Heart offer a simple and effective means to safeguard your heart and seek follow up care if needed. From 2014-2019, over 523 urgent or emergent level blood pressures were reported in San Diego County, that may have gone unchecked without the Love Your Heart event.
